Enhancing Resilience in Canada's North: New Approaches Needed

Communities in Canada's North face distinct challenges, such as climate change, a lack of adequate infrastructure, remoteness and isolation, and a host of socio-economic issues. Often Northerners are forced to confront these threats with fewer resources and less assistance than their southern counterparts. Building resilience in the North ultimately requires initiatives that will ensure that local populations are better equipped to deal with emergencies. Emerging as a viable, but yet largely untested, approach in the North is the concept of resilience assessment that takes its starting point in the inherent strengths of a community.

The Territories Leading Canada in Economic Growth

Territorial Outlook Winter 2012"Canada's northern territories are benefiting from the global commodities boom. Collectively, real GDP in the territories will advance by an impressive average of better than 7 per cent in 2012 and 2013, easily outpacing the Canadian average."

The Northern Transportation Systems Assessment

Northern Transportation System AssessmentConducted by PROLOG Canada for Transport Canada, this study determines what transportation infrastructure will be required to support growing demand in the North over the next 20 years; and determines what incremental improvements will help build a transportation system that supports Canada's vision for northern development.
