Enhancing Resilience in Canada's North: New Approaches Needed
Communities in Canada's North face distinct challenges, such as climate change, a lack of adequate infrastructure, remoteness and isolation, and a host of socio-economic issues. Often Northerners are forced to confront these threats with fewer resources and less assistance than their southern counterparts. Building resilience in the North ultimately requires initiatives that will ensure that local populations are better equipped to deal with emergencies. Emerging as a viable, but yet largely untested, approach in the North is the concept of resilience assessment that takes its starting point in the inherent strengths of a community.
